Epoxy Coatings

Epoxy coatings are used on concrete and steel surfaces to create a resistant barrier against the damaging effects of water, acidic and alkaline substances, chemicals, and solvents. Fire, heat, and abrasion resistance are also key considerations when selecting an industrial coating. Most fusion bonded epoxy coatings consist of two distinct components, which are mixed prior to application:

  • An epoxy resin, such as bisphenol A, bisphenol F, or phenolic novolac
  • Hardening and/or co-reactant agents

The various resins, co-reactants, and hardening agents used in epoxy coatings display a wide range of features and are chosen based on the finished product's performance demands. Fusion bonded epoxy coating formulations are selected through careful evaluation of the materials being coated and the environmental conditions they will face during use.

Factors to Consider When Choosing an Epoxy Formulation

When selecting an epoxy coating, the following material and environmental factors must be carefully analyzed:

  • Substrate type. The epoxy coating must be indicated for use on the specific substrate being treated (e.g. stainless steel, concrete, industrial alloys, etc.).
  • Surface preparation. Some substrates require additional surface preparation to ensure the epoxy coating performs according to expectations.
  • Environment and performance factors. Epoxy coatings must be selected with the end environment in mind, as certain resins, co-reactants, and hardening agents can improve overall performance in specific conditions.
  • Applications. Some epoxy coatings must be applied using a particular method, such as spraying, brushing, or rolling. In some cases, the application method impacts the range of available options.
  • Cost and value propositions. To compare cost and value, consider the amount of epoxy coating required to treat the substrate in question, as well as the life expectancy of that particular coating.
